Chef Gordon Ramsay hosts cooking class

The following article is part of an April Fools’ Edition of The Etownian: the stories are fake the but interviews/quotes are real.

On Friday, March 25, Elizabethtown College hosted none other than Gordan Ramsay himself, who held a cooking class in the Bower’s Center Demonstration Kitchen.

There he cooked various foods that he is known for making, such as mud pies, his famous beef wellington, a rack of lamb and a fried frog, curiously enough. He also allowed a few students to cook some of the recipes and finished by giving everyone who attended the event their own cookbook of his recipes. The event had a turnout of around 100 people including faculty and students.

He started the event out by making his well-known mud pies. Some students had not known how he makes his mud pies, such as student Faith Sheppard.

“At first, I thought he meant he was going to make dirt like the dessert with chocolate pudding and Oreos, but then he went outside and grabbed some mud and started cooking. I think it’s great he brought us all back to our cooking roots,” Sheppard said.

Despite this confusion, Sheppard does claim she had liked his mud pie and it was her favorite dish. She also was shocked to see the theme Chef Ramsay had set up for the event but impressed to see that he was able to skate well in the kitchen.

“I thought it was a little weird that it was 70’s disco themed but he really knows how to skate around the kitchen. It was also kinda hard to cook under just black lights, but I think not knowing if you grabbed the right ingredients added to the fun,” Sheppard said.

Another curious decision Chef Ramsay made was that everyone at the event had to speak in Esperanto. Esperanto is a language that mixes Spanish, French and English, and Chef Ramsay had everyone speak it to test the students’ knowledge and add an extra challenge.

He had allowed students to participate in the events cooking while making the famous beef wellington. A student known as Mackey had been allowed to help with cooking the wellingtons among a few other students. Mackey had claimed that Chef Ramsay had thrown flour at someone for messing up while exclaiming, “ĝi estas kio ĝi estas.”

Another student named Connor Burke said that shortly after this incident, Chef Ramsay called someone else an idiot sandwich. Sheppard also claimed that he said some weird and confusing things during the event.

“He said that the girls that get it get it and the girls that don’t don’t, and I think that really says a lot about how our society views cooking,” Sheppard said.

After all the recipes had been finished, the students were allowed to try the different food made. Everyone seemed to enjoy the different foods and, when asked, Sammy Yanez said that she liked his beef wellington the most.

The students were then given a cookbook of all of Chef Ramsay’s recipes. The cookbook had featured many different recipes he had used on his shows over the years and included the recipes cooked at the demo kitchen.

The event had garnered lots of interest from students and had a positive turnout with beloved opinions from students.

“He’s a really funny and cool guy, I really appreciate his time visiting Elizabethtown College,” Burke said.

Despite this there were students who disliked some of Chef Ramsay’s actions and wish that if he returns for some restrictions to be put in place.

“I would definitely have him here again, but next time maybe put a restriction on languages and the amount of flour allowed to be thrown,” Mackey said.

Overall the event was a success and it can only be hoped that Chef Ramsay will return to teach another class in the future.
